My Dog Story

Well we have been contemplating getting the girls a puppy. They would love it so much! WO is in a word obsessed with dogs. Me I am not all that crazy about a puppy, I don’t want to potty train it, or have it chew everything in the house, or have to find a babysitter for it if we leave for a weekend. I would prefer a little older dog but then there is the last experience we had with a dog. One of WH friends at work need to get rid of a dog cause they were moving. So we go check her out. She was a 3 yr old Doberman mix. So we fall in love with her right away, and brought her home. She was such a sweetie, we all loved her. There is a big BUT here (no not mine) WO pestered the dog (Sammie) all the time. I mean all the time. Not in a mean way just always petting or laying on her. One day Sammie was sitting next to me on the couch and WO came over and started petting her. All of a suddenly Sammie got up and Jumped on top of WO and bit her on the face. I jumped up and hit Sammie so she would get off WO. Sammie ran away to her bed and I picked up WO and got her hair out of her face, blood coming from a bite on her face. I rushed her to the bathroom wiped the blood and saw she was going to need stitches. I called WH and he met me at the emergency room. They had to give her a shot to make her sleep so they could clean the bite and stitch it up. This is a picture of what it looked like the next morning.

Then we had to deal with what were we going to do with Sammie? No shelter would take her, and I didn’t know anyone without kids to take her. Everywhere we called said the same thing we have to put her down or keep her. I couldn’t have her stay and do this again. So we told the kids we gave her to the pound where someone else would take her home. I love Sammie and I have to say I am even tearing up right now thinking about her. That was one of the hardest things for me to do. It took me months to get over, I was crying about that decision for weeks. The kids didn’t know why I was so sad. Wo still talks about Sammie and prays she is in a good home. I honestly don’t know if I could go through that again. I don’t think I am ready yet for another dog and although puppies are tempting, I think it will still be a while before we get a dog again.

Oh my gosh! What a terrible bite. I live with six dogs and I can tell you they are lots of work. If anyone tells you raising a puppy is easy, it isn't.
You might want to look beyond the pounds to a local breed rescue group that pre-screens the dogs and the homes to try to ensure a good match. There are many reasons people turn in their dogs and you can find wonderful family dogs.

What about another kind of pet?

Oh, wow! I would be hesistant, too. We have 2 dogs now (a mini poodle and a pit bull/terrier mix) that are very humble with my children. We have had the pit bull mix for 7 years now...and so far no biting. I think it really matters how humble a dog is. My poodle (and they are famous for NOT liking children) loves my kids. He has let them know if they go too far with him, but he has never drawn blood. He is very humble as well. What I mean by that is that they both know where they stand in our family.

It's hit or miss with dogs. You get a good one or you don't. We got so very lucky with Simba, who puts up with my kids wonderfully, but I don't know that another dog would be so patient.
Hold off until you're really feeling ready, because we know who will be doing most of the work. ;)
